I wanted to hear this piece again. I'm not knowledgeable about classical music, regrettably. That does not mean that I do not like classical music - some I do very much (Nimrod is an example), some less so.
When searching for this on YouTube I read someone's comment underneath and I repeat it word for word here. Why? - My father always told me to be grateful for being born a Brit. I could list here (but I won't) things that make me ashamed to be a Brit, but yes, of course, we have much to be proud of too and these wonderful words from an African are very moving and potent I feel.
Listen, I'm African and I say with all my heart that you English have everything to be proud of in your art, culture, history and achievements. Please, safeguard it with all your might for the rest of us live in the deepest envy of it all and most seek for nothing better than to rubbish it all and to make you feel less the people you truly are. Do not relent, oh pearly isles! Fill up your breasts with air and be proud of where you've been and what you've done!
