Sir John Betjeman on a Branch Line

This is an interesting film about The Somerset & Dorset Railway and Burnham on Sea, one of many films that Sir John Betjeman produced and there are some parts that make me smile.

I like him appearing from underneath a railway waggon still with his cigarette on the go (I've never smoked but I acknowledge smoking and it's place in history and society). I love his uninhibited attack on Doctor Beeching and his call to war against the then imminent railway cuts.

All these films are nostalgic and I find them quite emotional and sad as so much that in my view that was wrong about the priorities of government over the ages is spelled-out so movingly. I suppose that means that I am a 'left-winger.' I am actually very much in favour of business and enterprise and it only works if it is profitable - I know that - and that is all HMG and Beeching spoke about - how the railways lost money. The thing is - maybe we should care more about people and less about money and profitability in some scenarios (like transportation).
