Victorian KELHAM HALL (near Newark - Notts) - designed by the builder of St Pancras Station, Sir George Gilbert Scott (& saved by SJB) - a visit organised by The Shires branch (via the Lincolnshire branch) of The Sir John Betjeman Society (of which we are members). We shared our car with a delightful couple that we have met through the group - Frances and David Carr of one of my favourite villages in The Lincolnshire Wolds - Langton by Spilsby.
The Hall is in the process of being converted to a hotel. For many years it was a Christian clergy training establishment (full of a hundred or so monks). A rolling BBC (old from the 1960s I believe) film of the monks was shown in The Hall and I found it really oppressive (the lifestyle etc.) - ghastly.
Here's some pictures - I found it a rather depressing place overall (but there are some wonderful parts of the interior and the exterior is very impressive and so like the station!).
