First film review.

We go to the cinema (or let's say "Kinema") quite a lot. Why? - Because we have two 'Meerkat accounts' - meaning we buy insurance through www.comparethemarket.com and one can get a simple (unrequired) travel insurance for a day for as little as a few pounds and then one is entitled to a year's worth of film-going at 241 (also 241 meals now).

We have at least three moderately local cinemas to choose from all within the scheme:

  • Kinema-in-the-Woods - Woodhall Spa (a delightful old-style venue)
  • The Loewen cinema - Mablethorpe (a very odd and quirky place & dirt cheap price-wise)
  • The Parkway Playhouse cinema - Louth (a comfortable if slightly more expensive venue).
Back-ups are at Boston and Skegness and we've even been to Cleethorpes which has a 10 screen cinema.

Yesterday we went twice in one day (which we've done many times before) to see two separate films at separate locations - Mablethorpe and Louth. You need two accounts to do that. One of the best arrangements is in Louth where we sometimes do an afternoon film, come out and have an Italian meal (for 'peanuts' at Via Italia - another story) and then do an evening film - total cost for two - typically a little over 30 quid plus fuel to get there. We sound mean - we're not.

While I think of it - the scheme only permits one visit per week on either a Tuesday or Wednesday.

This post is a work-in-progress - I got up at five a.m. - tired now and pain-killing tablets now working so back to bed for an hour or two - to be continued ...

... now continued (almost 10 a.m.) ...

The Children Act - Emma Thompson stars

My wife and I enjoyed it as we predicted we would. It was torturous towards the end and from the mid-point onwards one really felt the judge's dilemma's when a young man that she had to rule on (a Jehovah Witness/blood transfusion case) appears to be falling in love with her. I recommend it if you can stick with a film about situations rather than any action.

My rating: 8 out of 10.

Where did we see it and what did it cost?

Louth Playhouse (Parkway) cinema at 5 p.m. using 241 Meerkat ticketing (so one free) and both cinema-goers being eligible for a concessionary entrance price - total cost about £6 (sorry for lack of precision - I will try to make a note next time).

Equalizer 2 - Denzel Washington stars

I went to see this as I expected it to be a car chase/action type movie and although my wife came along (excuse the pun) for the ride both of us were surprised in that there was only one (great) car chase and the superbly plotted story was fantastic and far superior to anything 'Death Wish/Charles Bronson' style genre that I had seen for years. Denzel was amazing in the part. Mostly my enjoyment was that it was a very clever story.

My rating: 9 out of 10.

Where did we see it and what did it cost?

Mablethorpe Loewen cinema at 11.30 (early bird with free tea/coffee show). Both cinema-goers eligible for concessionary entrance price - total cost an amazing £4.20 to include one free hot drink. Assume that with all cinema trips we are using the Meerkat scheme (241). That cost is FOR TWO PEOPLE!
